We were not planning on getting a wedding cake because of our “pie-pass” (a pass for each person that helps reduce the cost of attendance at the wedding). We were planning on making our own pies, but our friends insisted we had to get a cake. They recommended Ashley Bakes Cakes and said she was fantastic. They were right! We were impressed the first time we went in her store. She was very friendly and personable. We got to sample all kinds of cake, frosting and filling combinations. We finally decided on a chocolate cake with a chocolate mousse filling, chocolate buttercream frosting and semisweet chocolate decorations. The top was a whipped cream topping. The cake was delicious and we really liked that we didn’t have to freeze a top tier for a year, she makes them fresh. Also, the price was fantastic! Everything was perfect… except for one thing. We made the cake for our wedding, got it delivered and set up. We were going to do our ceremony in the backyard, but the day before, we decided we wanted the ceremony inside, not in the backyard. Our friends had already reserved the back of the house for the day. We called Ashley to tell her we needed to move the cake inside and she was very accommodating and said it was no problem at all. We moved the cake and all. It was running on hours, so we didn’t think it would be very noticeable. Wrong! The cake was placed at the top of the stairs, the base was in the hall and the top of the cake was in the kitchen. We thought it was running on thin ice and couldn’t move it at all, so the whole cake was just sitting there, completely blocking the stairs. The steps were fine, it just looked like a big cake in the middle of the floor. We called Ashley to ask her if we could just move it a few feet to make room for the procession and she said that wouldn’t be a problem at all. We moved it a few feet and it was perfect! It just looked like it was about to fall over. After the wedding, we found out that the top tier was just as heavy as the cake was supposed to be. We didn’t know this before the wedding, of course, so it was very embarrassing because a) the cake was heavier than we thought and b) we had to have the staff member from the bakery move the cake again. Ashley was very sympathetic and told us not to worry about it. That we would get a free anniversary cake and that it was just an honest mistake. We were very grateful for her kindness and professionalism. We had to freeze the top tier and send it to her because we live out of state. When we got it back (1 year later), the cake was not as big as we remembered. We had to cut a piece in half to even get enough cake for the entire year! The cake didn’t even feed the entire wedding, much less an anniversary party. We were very very disappointed with this. We were very excited to have such a great-looking cake, but the cake we got was too small to feed the amount of people that were there and the cake was sitting so high on the steps that it was almost falling over. I don’t know how much of this was the fault of Ashley, but it was very disappointing. We would have had a different experience if we had a inside wedding, but we didn’t and so we had to deal with this situation. I thought the cake was delicious and the price was great, but when I say that the cake we got wasn’t worth the money we paid for it…it just wasn’t!
